The proposed redesign

Picture
SYMBOLISM
The blue represents the Hudson River, the orange represents Albany's agricultural and fur-trading past as Fort Orange, and the white represents peace, unity, and assiduity. All three colors allude to Albany's Dutch history.

The five compass stars collectively represent Albany's discovery and historical navigation of the Hudson, and their shining is a symbol of progress and hope. Individually, from left to right, they stand for the Half Moon arriving in Albany in 1609, the 1613 Two Row Wampum Treaty between the Dutch and the Haudenosaunee, the 1686 Dongan charter establishing the city, the 1754 signing of the Albany Plan of Union, and the 1797 decision making Albany the capital of New York.
DESIGN PROCESS
This flag was selected after a six-month design process involving many members of the community, Native American groups, and vexillology experts. Throughout this period, more than thirty different proposals were created and voted on, and input was carefully considered at every stage. Hopefully this can be a flag that actually represents all of us.
